How often must a Dentist take a Risk Management course?

A Dentist must take a Risk Management course every 3 years.


Where can I get a list of all continuing education courses I have taken?

To get a complete listing of the continuing education courses you have taken, please visit the New York State Dental Association website.

Click on the link "CE Records Online" and follow the instructions.


How many hours of Mandatory Continuing Education (MCE) must a dentist complete and how often? Can any of these hours be completed other than in an actual lecture?

A dentist must complete 60 hours of MCE every 3 years (which is the licensing period).

You may complete up to 18 of the 60 hours as "home study" - meaning online or not in an actual classroom.

Are there specific courses that a dentist must take to renew his/her license?

Yes. All dentists who have a continuing education requirement must take the following courses:

  • Beginning January 1, 2009, all dentists must achieve certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and from that point forward, continually maintain certification.
  • During your first registration period after January 1, 2002, you must complete on a one-time basis, a two-hour course regarding the oral health effects of tobacco and tobacco products.
  • During your first registration period which begins on or after January 1, 2008, you are required to complete, on a one-time basis, a State approved course in dental jurisprudence and ethics. 

Dentists must also complete a State approved infection control course every 4 years.


How often must a dentist take an Infection Control course?

A dentist must take an Infection Control course every 4 years.

The 8th District Society offers an Infection Control course once a year, typically in the Spring.

You can take an Infection Control course online, through www.nysdental.org.


How often must a dentist take the Tobacco Cessation/Oral Cancer course?

A dentist must take the Tobacco Cessation/Oral Cancer course only once.

How can I, a patient, file a complaint against a dentist?

There are 2 ways to file a complaint against a dentist.

1. If the dentist is a member of the 8th District Dental Society, you can file a complaint through our Peer Review Process.  Please call the Society Office for more information, or to file a complaint.

2. If the dentist is NOT a member of the 8th District Dental Society, you can file a complaint through the New York State Office of Professional Discipline.  To download the complaint form, please click here.
