Welcome to the Eighth District Dental Society!

Hello all,

I hope you are all doing well, and are following the Covid-19 preventive protocols that have been recommended in your county, as well as the guidelines strongly that have been recommended by our NYS Governor, Andrew Cuomo. Hopefully, this unprecedented situation resolves soon, although there is no certainty as to its longevity. It is important to stay current with all of the news as it relates to the spread of Covid-19, as well as following the steps of frequent hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, avoidance of crowds, social distancing, self monitoring, and of course closing down our offices, except for urgent dental care, with emphasis on “urgent”.

Obviously, this idea of ‘sheltering’ and closing will have a tremendous impact on all of us, financially, socially, and emotionally to our staffs, patients, and our families. That is why I am strongly recommending that all dentists be kept aware of the latest information available through the ADA, NYSDA, and of course the Eighth District Dental Society. Additionally, I would also suggest that all dentists sign up for Action Alerts through the ADA website at:

https://www.ada.org/en/advocacy/get-involved/legislative-action-center

It is simple; just sign up with your email address and submit. This is an excellent source of “up to the minute” practical, economic and legislative information that will affect all of us.

In addition, to all who are interested and there is a desire to contribute as a medical/dental volunteer locally, please contact the Erie County Department of Health website, or 716-858-7690, or your Public Health Dept. in your County of residence. We have a tremendous amount of education, training, and willingness to contribute in many ways to help minimize the effects of this crisis. So, if possible, let’s contribute and hopefully shorten this unexpected and unwanted period of suspended animation.

Please be safe, responsible, stay healthy, and act appropriately in reducing the spread of the Coronavirus. Hopefully, we will all return to normalcy as soon as possible.

Thank you.

Warm and safe regards,

James C. Matteliano DDS

The 2019 ADA House of Delegates in San Fransisco, CA

The House of Delegates (HOD) is the legislative and governing body and supreme authority of the American Dental Association (ADA). It represents more than 163,000 dentist members of the ADA and the dental profession in the United States. There are 483 members of the HOD chosen by the 53 constituent societies, the five federal dental services and the American Student Dental Association.

The HOD meets once a year during the ADA Annual Meeting. This year the House met in San Francisco, CA from September 6-9, 2019. I was happy to serve as a delegate with Dr. Glen Donnarumma, along with our alternate delegates Drs. Kevin Hanley and John Tibbetts.

The HOD closed its 2019 session with a balanced budget, adopting policies to support state-based advocacy, enhance the digital member experience and continue efforts to strengthen the financial stability of the association.

New officers were installed and elections took place. New York State’s own Dr. Chad P. Gehani became the 156th President of the ADA. There were six candidates who ran for Speaker of the House, including two from New York State; the House elected Dr. W. Mark Donald from Mississippi. Other officers include: President-Elect Dr. Daniel J. Klemmedson, Second Vice President Dr. Vincent U. Rapini, and Treasurer Dr. Ted Sherwin.

The issues of the House were divided into four reference committees for testimony and voting. I will highlight some of the key resolutions in each of these reference committees:
