The Eighth District Dental Society is a professional association whose members consist of dentists from the eight counties of Western New York—Niagara, Erie, Chautauqua, Allegany, Cattaraugus, Wyoming, Genesee, and Orleans. There are approximately 1,000 members in the Society. Each Eighth District member is also a member of the American Dental Association and New York State Dental Association.
NYSDA Volunteer Dental Demonstration Project
There are 8,760 hours in a year, are you willing to give 5 of those hours to help out people less fortunate?
Last year, the New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) conducted the first-ever NYS Mission of Mercy. Many of you volunteered and participated in this amazing event, which provided nearly $1 million in free treatment to over 1,000 men, women and children.
This year, your local Dental Society is working with NYSDA to do a series of events geared toward providing free dental care, including screenings, palliative care, prophylaxis, direct restorations and extractions to patients who do not have a dental home.
On Friday, November 13th, NYSDA held the first of these events at the Finger Lakes Community Health Center in Ovid, NY. The day was a huge success – we were able to see 29 patients, 28 of whom have become new patients at the Ovid Health Center.
We have 2 more events planned for the spring:
Of course, our ongoing efforts to improve oral health care cannot possibly be accomplished without the participation of you, the dental volunteer. Won’t you please help us by volunteering just a few hours of your time at one of these events, in this worthy initiative?
In the brief time we have these patients, we cannot solve all of their oral health issues. But we are hopeful they will leave the event with not only a solution to their immediate dental problem, but also with a renewed sense of their worth and the relief of having found a dental home to return to for routine oral care.
