Course Description:
This continuing education course provides general dentists with a comprehensive overview of the current multidisciplinary management of oral and head and neck cancer patients. Participants will gain an understanding of the critical role dentistry plays throughout the cancer treatment continuum, from pre-treatment dental and maxillofacial evaluation to post-treatment rehabilitation and long-term maintenance care. The course will review contemporary approaches to dental and maxillofacial treatment planning prior to surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, with a focus on minimizing oral complications and preserving function. Participants will also explore the prevention and management of treatment-related oral sequelae, including mucositis, xerostomia, osteoradionecrosis, trismus, infection, and prosthetic challenges. In addition, the course will address the complex functional and esthetic considerations associated with surgical reconstruction and prosthetic rehabilitation following oral and head and neck cancer therapy. Special attention will be given to the nutritional, speech, and swallowing ramifications of cancer treatment and the importance of coordinated supportive care in improving quality of life for survivors.
